Short Course Programmes

Mountaineering is adventurous undertaking the call for experience, patience and concern for safety. The Mountain Guiding course is designed for individuals expediting mountains specifically the free standing mountain (Mount Kilimanjaro). It is designed to equip climbers guiding visitors to the top of the mountain with appropriate knowledge and skills to enhance visitors' safety and experience during expeditions. Such skills include interpretation of physical and biological resources, mountains ecology, first aid and wilderness rescue skills, and tourists handling and guiding skills. The training methods are twofold: in-class teaching and field practical training which takes place on Mount Kilimanjaro. We have experienced trainers who are also mountaineers.

Course duration: Three weeks.

A wilderness safari is not a trip to the zoo but to the animal's home. A tourist has to be safe and deserve to get the right experience of the wilderness without causing harm or be harmed by the animals. This is where the need for safari guiding short course arises. The training is designed for professionals in tourism industry taking tourists into wilderness. This course will equip safari guides with knowledge and skills on interpretation of different biological and physical resources specifically mammals, birds, plants, reptiles and insects. In addition skills such as tracking skills, bush survival skills, first aid and wilderness rescue skills to enhance visitors experience and ensure their satisfactions will be covered. The training is 100 percent practical taking place in protected areas. The College have experienced trainers who have researched and guided visitors to most protected areas in Tanzania.

Course duration: Two weeks.

Walking safari gives a visitor an opportunity to experience and observe the wildlife in its own habitat, undisturbed and sometimes close up and personal. Walking safari is all about stepping into the domain of animals and take to their pace of life. It is going to where no vehicle can go and this gives a feeling of adventure and explorations of nature by a tourists. Now to ensure the safety and good experience of walking safari, a well trained, knowledgeable, skilled and experienced walking safari guide is needed. The programme is designed to equip the walking safari guides with necessary skills required in conducting a walking safari in wilderness. Skills such as basics of safe rifle handling, managing animals' encounter, tactful management of the group when large potentially dangerous animals are encountered but also first aid and wilderness rescue skills, weather conditions forecasting skills for a safe walk, as well as guiding and interpretations skills on resources encountered during walking safari. We have experienced trainers from the college who have vast practical experience in wildlife walking safaris to National Parks and other protected areas in Tanzania and beyond. The training is 100 percent practical taking place in our protected areas.

Course duration: Two weeks.

TThe goal of snake capture and translocation short course is to aid conservation efforts of biodiversity, to save human life against snakebite and to reduce mortality that might be caused by snake bites. Also, to eliminate perceptions on snakes being considered as dangerous animals. Topics that will be coved during the short course includes snake identification, snake fangs and venom, how to use snake handling equipments and protection gears, proper snake handling, snake search techniques, handling non venomous snake, handling venomous snakes, importance of snakes, how to work safely in snake environment, snake bite first aid, snake handling ethics and legal aspects as well as snake relocation and translocation.

Course duration: One Week

The goal of this course is to capacitate wildlife officials, investors, law enforcers, workers and students to employ the best biostatistics techniques for appropriate interpretation of their data and come up with sound decision making in regard to Natural resources for the sustained development. At the end of this training, participants will be equipped with skills and knowledge on how to apply descriptive statistics in analyzing conservation data, apply inferential statistics in analyzing conservation data, apply statistical packages (SPSS and R programming) in conservation data analysis and apply data presentation and interpretation skills to communicate conservation findings.

Course duration: One Week

The goal of this course is to capacitate wildlife officials, investors, law enforcers and workers of ranches, farms, zoos and sanctuaries to employ the best wildlife and business management techniques for the sustained future of wildlife species and communities. Through this course, learners will be equipped with concepts related to wildlife ranches, farms, zoos and sanctuaries for sustained development, principles and approaches of wildlife ranching for better livelihood and conservation, management approaches for wildlife farms for improved conservation and human well being, management techniques for Wildlife zoos for awareness, livelihood and conservation, management techniques for wildlife sanctuaries and orphanage centers for sustaining wildlife species.

Course duration: Two weeks

This course aims to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to strengthen team work spirit, discipline, endurance, confidence and self - reliance both during survival emergency situations. Also improve navigational skills when they will be working in field activities.The wilderness programme expedition is comprised of three main sections namely, the plain expedition, the solo expedition and the summit expedition. Participation of the first two is compulsory; the summit expedition to Mt Kilimanjaro is optional. It is made optional due to potential health ailments, injuries and fatalities associated with mountaineering. However, all participants are required to summit up to the second cave (3486m asl).

This course aims to provide participants with practical skills on risks identification, management and apply various techniques to manage various risks related to wildlife management and wildlife tourism thus enhancing effective management of wildlife and development of tourism sector at large. Generally, participants will be equipped with knowledge and skills on basics concepts of Risk Management for effective management of natural resources and tourism, Identify risks to help decision makers to develop effective risk responses in natural resources and tourism, Asses various risks for effective management of natural resources and tourism and application of various techniques to control and manage risks related to natura resources and tourism.

Course duration: One Week

This course intends to provide participants with practical skills necessary for them to apply GIS and remote sensing in answering ecological questions. Through completion of this course, participants will be equipped with skills and knowledge on how to apply QGIS in making maps, Work with existing raster and vector layers, Collect and manage data with GPS and smart phones, Collecting and analyzing data using remote sensing, Create spatial features from the existing ones and Using QGIS tools and remote sensing to answer ecological questions.

Course duration: One week

This course aims to enhance Natural Resource officers and Tourism Officers supervisory, management and leadership skills from self leading to leading or mentoring others, to leading organization. This will lead to improved supervisory, management and leadership capacity, and acquisition of new skills, knowledge and tools to transform organizational leadership performance. Participants will review concepts related to leadership in natural resources and tourism management, describe use of power and politics in natural resources and tourism management, apply techniques in self and team leading in natural resources and tourism management. Furthermore, they will apply leadership strategies and skills to enhance performance in natural resources and tourism management, describe work stress as a factor influencing performance in natural resources and tourism management and explain ethical leadership and governance to enhance performance in natural resources and tourism management.

Course duration: One week

The course aims to provide participants with theory and practical understanding of Protected Area Management and Planning their applications in wildlife management. This course is relevant to wildlife managers, researchers and planners who will work within wildlife and natural resource management sectors, including government, NGOS, private organizations and companies with interest wildlife conservation and management. It will equip participants with knowledge and skills on developing protected areas management plans, steps for developing management plans in protected areas and to develop implementation and monitoring plans.

Course duration: One week

This course aims to provide participants with knowledge, skills and attitude to meet tourists' demands with guaranteed healthy and secure interactions between tourists, people and tourist attractions. The course will explore ecological aspects that really shape the tourism activities in protected areas. Furthermore, participants will be equipped with principles of effective interpretive communication to conduct tour guiding functions, apply interpretation skills to plan interpretation activity to enhance tour guiding functions and employ personnel and non personnel interpretation techniques to perform tour guiding.

Course duration: Two weeks

This Safari aims to provide participants with the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary for them to understand soil- plants-animals interactions, develop appropriate management strategies and perform routine activities in the course of managing wildlife resources within and outside protected areas. These competencies will enable them to work in different environments within the wildlife management sectors.
